Cirfly is an agricultural start-up based in Lomé, Togo. Our speciality is the black soldier fly (rest assured, we don't breed just one!), more specifically:

We produce a protein based on black soldier fly larvae and organic fertiliser.

The larvae of our flies feed on organic waste collected from our local partners, and our various products are intended for feed and livestock farmers (fish farms, poultry farms, pig farms). The protein produced replaces fishmeal or soya meal, which are generally imported and expensive. Our products fit in perfectly with the production of complete feed for animals, as a treat or as a supplement!

Our organic fertiliser is made from the larvae's own organic waste and is intended for farmers and private gardeners. It helps combat soil impoverishment.

Cirfly is the idea of Henry, who wanted to go into poultry farming in Africa (yes, poultry farming is going up and up in Africa), but he was soon faced with a problem:

Poultry feed accounts for almost 75% of costs.

So how do you find local substitutes with the same properties as fish or soya meal?

He thought back to a solution he had seen as a child in a cooperative in Ivory Coast, and in his various meetings he met Kaïna, a waste specialist, who joined him in the adventure of a lifetime. After more than a year of bibliographical studies, training and promising tests in a 25m2 studio (yes, it wasn't easy!), and then at the bottom of a garden in Togo, Henry and Kaïna decided to launch their first farm in Lomé.

P.S.: the image you can admire is a harvert of black soldier fly eggs! (So the eternal question: what came first the egg or the fly?)

P.S: Don't trust the photo, Kaïna is more beautiful in real life!

  • Greenhouse gas emissions due to the numerous imports

  • Overfishing, today we fish for bait to be able to fish more

  • The fluctuating price of animal feed, with major price variations, due to raw materials being that are subject to the stock market

Part of the health risks of our establishment environment

Cirfly provides 3 direct solutions:

The local and affordable production of an insect-based protein that allows the development of livestock sectors, (it makes you want, but it's not chocolate!)

Image title

The production of an organic fertilizer allowing soil enrichment and the development of organic farming.

Image title

The fight against unsanitary conditions with the recovery of organic waste via collection at the source and the implementation of sorting and good practice

In addition to these direct solutions provided by Cirfly, we also contribute to the indirect improvement of our social environment through:

  • Direct job creation: we have trained and hired 9 people since the start of our activities;

Image title

  • The creation of indirect jobs: remuneration of women soya producers through the purchase of their spent grains and informal pre-collectors

  • Structuring the management of waste from our partner collection points: we produce a report on the waste collected, with the weight, type of waste and recovery carried out (currently in Togo, waste producers cannot trace the final management of their waste).

We are facing an increase in demand and want to increase our production capacity to satisfy even more customers and recover even more waste.

Your contribution will be used to:

  • Increase the production capacity of larvae by 5 by moving to vertical cultivation, with the acquisition of additional magnification bins: €3700

  • Increase larvae production capacity by a factor of 5 by switching to vertical culture, with the acquisition of additional grow-out bins. €1,300

  • Increase processing capacity by acquiring a high-capacity drum dryer. We already have a dryer, but its limited capacity means it cannot keep pace with the ever-increasing demand: 2000 €

A big thank you to all our first contributors! - ** Increase our waste management capacity with a shredder that will allow the nutrition of our new grow-out bins: 2000 €** - Always more flies for always more eggs! A 15 square meter aviary: €500

So why contribute? For the black soldier fly! No, we admit that this is the hardest question we have had to answer in our campaign. Because we know that you are also in an adventure in your lives!

*But we know that what we’re doing is right. So why should you take part in OUR adventure? *

Because you've understood that what we're doing is a circular economy with a short circuit! You'll be helping to improve our team's working conditions!

By contributing, you are helping to improve the living conditions of children, families and individuals. Either way, you're helping us to play an active part in improving this virtuous cycle, and ESPECIALLY for the environment!

*And we’re nice people!! *

Cirfly is a 1,800 m2 structure, with 600 m2 dedicated to rearing our larvae and 1,200 m2 for testing seaside vegetable gardens! As you can see, we're pioneers when it comes to recycling organic waste in Togo! So we've managed to forge several partnerships with committed Togolese players!

We also have a number of fish farmers who use our products in their complete feeds.

** Thank you again for the confidence they have in us, which has enabled us to grow.**

For our fertiliser we also have customers and feedback (the best customer are those who let you know how great is your product)!

Image title

Every month, we produce around 1t of insect protein, 15t of fertiliser and recycle over 20t of organic waste.

We also have our own vegetable garden, which we use to produce baskets for housewives and for our partner restaurants!

To sum up:

  • Our production processes are stable,

  • Structures are ready to provide us with more organic waste,

  • Our products are accepted by the various livestock sectors, in particular fish, poultry and agriculture; and we already have commercial contracts.

Today, the next step is to produce more, which means increasing our production capacity, to obviously meet a need and a regular demand.
